This was our third year with a science Olympiad team. We have 15 dedicated, hard-working students who are working hard after-school all year to prepare for the competition in April. The competition will be held at Phillip O. Berry High School in Charlotte. There, our team will compete against 15 other schools.
This is our second year being involved in Sea Perch. Sea Perch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips students and educators with the resources they need to build an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) in an in- or out-of-school setting. This after-school team meets throughout the year to build, from scratch, their ROVs. Students learn how to read diagrams, measure and cut PVC pipe, use a drill, sand, solder, sand, and so on. It is an amazing experience for all students involved. The team then competes in the Sea Perch competition against other schools at a local pool. During the competition, students have to control and navigate their ROVs through a series of different challenges. Our team placed 3rd last year in our first ever competition.
